This is the start of day 3 back at our temporary home by the sea, and I have fully entered the vortex of Jim’s healing care. Day one was spent in quiet panic on my part: If left unattended, will he wander off to the often-busy street in front of our house? How much can…

They say that brain injury is the “hidden injury” in that a person looks “normal” after the trauma. And that is so true in the case of my Jim: When I woke this morning to his familiar face, I loved what I saw. And then the day got going, and from the start, as he wandered with 3 pairs of pants in his hands, and one sock on his foot, and refused my help to get dressed, I saw how much he has changed. It’s going to take a lot of time and patience to establish a “new normal.” Hooboy.

While Jim’s brain is healing, there are some things I want you to know. Not sure why I want you to know–perhaps it will give you insight into a process of just one person among millions of people the world over who are healing from something, and one of millions of caregivers who are an…

The dark gray Bellingham morning didn’t promote wakefulness. Jim slept 18 miles away in a semi-private room at St Joseph’s Inpatient rehabilitation center, and I pried my self loose from bed and one of the first good night’s rest in 17 days. I wandered around the house, trying to remember what I promised to bring…

It should be the end of Jim’s 2 hospital stays. He’s restless and so am I. But instead of planning our escape from the cardiology ward jail to rehab 2 hours away, we are playing the waiting game. In short, his prothrombin time or pro-time or International Normalized Ratio–INR– is not within a therapeutic range…

It’s another day at Swedish hospital in Seattle. Another day wondering what is next for my guy Jim. Will he be alert and witty? Confused and upset? What games do I have to play to get him to “behave ” and not just jump up and, IV pole careening behind him, go for the bathroom…

I’m ending a long, long day in my room in the Cherry Hill Inn: aka the fifth floor of Swedish hospital, Cherry Hill Campus, Seattle. I started the day after a long night with a frustrated , exhausted Jim, and an hour’s worth of sleep. Shuffle into the humble kitchen for coffee injection, and the…

I am sitting on a kingsized bed in a nice hotel near downtown Seattle–the stay is a gift from my wonderful in-laws. Last night’s glass of merlot sits next to a yet unread NY Times my son gifted me last Sunday. I am not relishing the hotel stay though, because a key element is missing…

Hello from our Bellingham, Washington bayside home, where two young eagles are sitting and sulking in a tree outside my window, probably wondering where their next meal will come now that the parents kicked them out of the nest. Youngsters: always hungry! Anyway, I’ve been wanting to let you all know what I am up…

Now that we are settling (at least for the moment) into this house by the sea, I am finally catching my breath, and harvesting what I have accumulated over the last months of traveling, discovering, thinking, dreaming. I am harvesting the collective wisdom I gleaned from the folks I met along the road, and even…
